In parallel with the new Aged Care Act (which commenced 1 July 2025), the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission published quality standards.

Under the quality standards, aged care providers must implement a risk management system to identify, manage and continuously review risks to individuals, workers and operations. From a water management perspective, this includes:

  • Preventing, controlling, minimising, or eliminating risks through proactive strategies (for example, by developing a water risk management plan)
  • Implementing a system for infection prevention and control which communicates and manages infection risks
  • Using data and feedback to improve care quality and safety (for example, by review of test results from structured water sampling protocols)

You can read the further detail about the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission recommendations for infection prevention and control here.
